April 2010: CONVERSIONs - One Night Stands at BronxArtSpace
|
|
CONVERSIONs
| one-night stands is a month-long artist festival taking
place this April in Mott Haven. Since 2004, CONVERSIONs
focuses each night on a different medium under a larger curatorial
theme; CONVERSIONs | one-night stands addresses
impermanence, temporary gratification and immediacy; a direct commentary on how contemporary
art is seen & experienced in the South Bronx. Artists from all over
the world have been
asked to respond to this concept and each night will host their
responses.

Since 2004, CONVERSIONs
is an artist driven
initiative that brings the alternative space into the studios of Mott
Haven artists with short-run exhibitions of work by visual, performing
and media artists. It had provided an opportunity for a community
without gallery space to produce and exhibit work. In the greater sense,
CONVERSIONs is the embodiment
of the South Bronx; a conversion of outside perceptions, inward
perspectives and a changing view on how contemporary art work is seen
and experienced in Mott Haven. It is meant to examine the zones of
exchange and cultural diversity surrounding this unique neighborhood. CONVERSIONs was founded &
organized by Melissa A. Calderon.
CONVERSIONs | one-night stands is made
possible in
part with public funds from the Bronx Council on the Arts through the
New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Greater New York Arts
Development Fund Regrants Program, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz
Jr. and the Bronx delegation of the City Council.
